Wood treatment for indoor and outdoor use in Jávea
At Bartolomé Bas Pinturas, we specialise in treating interior and exterior woodwork in houses, villas and flats in Jávea, Dénia, Moraira and along the Costa Blanca.
We apply professional varnishes, wood stains, oils and protective coatings to protect, restore and enhance the appearance of wood, preserving its natural beauty and extending its lifespan against the sun, moisture and wear and tear.
Wood treatment: protecting and maintaining its beauty
Wood is a living material that requires regular care to retain its colour, texture and strength. Over time, it is affected by moisture, UV rays, daily use and a lack of maintenance.
At Bartolomé Bas Pinturas, we assess each wooden surface and select the most suitable system: water-based varnishes, wood stains, oils, fungicide protectants or restoration treatments, depending on whether the surface is indoors or outdoors.
Our aim is to ensure that your doors, furniture, staircases, decking, pergolas and porches retain their natural appearance and are protected from the Costa Blanca climate.
Treatment and care of interior woodwork
Interior woodwork adds warmth and character to a home, but it is also affected by daily wear and tear, knocks, scuffs and temperature changes.

-
Repair of minor knocks and scratches
-
Application of water-based, odourless and quick-drying varnishes

Different types of wood treatments
Each type of wood and each application requires a different treatment. At Bartolomé Bas Pinturas, we work with:
-
Stains, to even out or change the colour of the wood
-
Varnishes, which provide surface protection and enhance the grain
-
Wood stains, which protect without forming a film and allow the wood to breathe
-
Oils, ideal for flooring and furniture, which nourish and rehydrate the wood
-
Fungicide and insecticide protectants, to prevent mould and woodworm
We’ll help you choose the best combination so that the wood in your home is protected, looks beautiful and matches the style of your home.

Treatment and care of outdoor timber
Treated outdoor timber surfaces age differently, depending on the ability of the surface treatment to protect the wood against decay. Under a coat of paint, the wood may remain completely intact, whereas wood treated with a pigmented stain may begin to age and change colour after just a few years.
Therefore, the choice of finish, whether paint or varnish, has a major impact on maintenance requirements. Paint may be chosen for a specific colour, but also for its protection against moisture.
The durability of the treatment depends on several factors, such as the quality of the wood itself, the choice of treatment type, and the various conditions to which the treatment is exposed, such as sun, rain, frost, wind, etc.
Paint adheres better to a finely sanded surface than to one that has been roughly sanded. Treatments also adhere better to freshly manufactured, unexposed timber. Wooden surfaces begin to deteriorate when exposed to sun and rain, which negatively affects the bond between the surface treatment and the wood beneath. For this reason, it is highly recommended to carry out annual maintenance on all outdoor wood; this prevents deterioration and ensures durability for years to come.
It is very important that timber intended for outdoor use is given a coat of primer when it is installed; this will protect the surface from UV exposure.
Different types of treatments for outdoor timber
Wood sealants
Wood sealants are perhaps one of the most reliable ways to protect timber from the elements and rot. They work in a similar way to pressure treatment, but without the pressure. Wood sealants usually consist of some kind of plastic/acrylic compound.
Oil-based finishes
You may wonder how wood was waterproofed before plastic-based sealants came along. The answer is that outdoor wood was treated with various types of oil-based finishes. It is not that difficult to apply one of these hand-rubbed oil finishes to wood, and they have the advantage of giving the wood a really attractive appearance. This type of finish or treatment is increasingly falling out of favour due to paints with other treatments.
Stain and sealant combinations
If you’re struggling to decide between a stain and a sealant, you can do both at the same time. There are a number of different products that offer both stain and sealant in the same mixture. If you’re going to do both anyway, you can save time by doing it all in a single step.

Frequently asked questions about treating wood indoors and outdoors
How often should outdoor wood be treated?
On the Costa Blanca, we recommend checking and renewing the treatment of outdoor timber every 1–2 years, depending on exposure to sun, rain and humidity. In areas with high exposure, it may be necessary to do this more frequently.
What is the difference between varnish, wood stain and wood oil?
Varnish forms a protective film on the surface; wood stain penetrates and protects whilst leaving the pores open, allowing the wood to breathe; and oil nourishes the wood deep down, making it ideal for decking and outdoor furniture.
Is it always necessary to sand the surface before applying a new coat?
In most cases, yes. Proper sanding removes damaged areas, opens up the wood grain and improves the adhesion of the new product, resulting in a more even and durable finish.
Can very grey, weathered outdoor timber be restored?
Yes. We can clean, sand and apply specialised products to restore the wood’s colour and protective finish. In many cases, it is possible to restore it to a condition very close to its original appearance.
What products do you use for the interior woodwork in your home?
We mainly use water-based varnishes and wood stains that are low-odour, quick-drying and highly resistant to everyday wear and tear. They are ideal for staircases, banisters, doors and indoor furniture.
Do wood treatments smell strongly or make a mess in the house?
We use low-odour products and organise our work by area. We protect floors and furniture and leave the property clean when we’ve finished. Wherever possible, we choose water-based products to minimise odours and reduce drying times.
Can you match the colour of an existing piece of wood?
Yes. By using stains and colour tests, we can match the original wood’s colour very closely, ensuring that repairs or new pieces blend in with the rest.
Do you also treat fungal infections or woodworm in timber?
Yes. We apply specific fungicides and insecticides to prevent or treat fungal infections and woodworm, always assessing the condition of the wood and the type of damage first.
Can I change the colour of the wood without losing the grain?
In many cases, yes. By using stains and wood stains, we can darken or alter the colour of the wood whilst preserving its natural grain, without covering it up as an opaque paint would.
In which areas do you offer your wood treatment service?
We mainly operate in Jávea (Xàbia), Dénia, Moraira, Benitachell, Gata de Gorgos and Pedreguer, as well as other nearby towns on the Costa Blanca.
